We’ve been sitting on this information for a while now but it’s pretty exciting to be able to announce that two of my favorite people in the whole world are about to collaborate on a book.
Neil Young, legendary Canadian songwriter and leader of seminal noise outfit, Crazy Horse, has teamed with the mighty Joshua Dysart to create the graphic novel version of Neil’s Greendale story. Joshua is a true visionary. He wrote the Avril Lavigne’s Make 5 Wishes story arc for House of Parlance and has also written classic stories for Vertigo’s Swamp Thing, Dark Horse’s Conan the Barbarian as well as the masterful Violent Messiahs. He’s got several irons in the creative fires and could eventually become the ‘Stan Getz’ of comics!*
Greendale the record was released in 2003 and has been adapted to film already. (Side note: I saw the Greendale tour at the White Water Amphitheatre in Auburn, Washington and it was an amazing show. It ended with a blazing rendition of Down by the River that literally blew the speakers!)
Sean Murphy – Outer Orbit & Off Road – will be handling the pencils.
Paste Magazine and Canada.com have great articles about the Greendale graphic novel. I can not wait to see the book hit the shelves.
* This refers to a joking conversation that Joshua and I had at Vij’s one night last year. For whatever reason - no doubt influenced by the red wine - I likened him to the legendary Charlie Parker. He told me that he didn’t think that he could ever be compared to Bird so I suggested that perhaps Stan Getz was more apt. If he doesn’t like it I’m dropping him all the way down to Herb Alpert.
